B2B SaaS Product

2026

One Platform, Endless Use

My most recent work explored revolutionizing ageing B2B, SAAS products for a lead motion capture solutions company. An ongoing company goal to overhaul and repair the brand’s status as top-dog of their industry meant that investing in both customer voice and providing a solution that made the barrier of entry to new users and experts alike was needed. This project was relatively long-form and undertaken behind the scenes for 2 years, intermittently being crafted between my other UI design duties on other projects.

As lead UI designer, my responsibilities of creating an umbrella product that could house several industry spaces within it was a substantial undertaking. The diversity of the industries currently being offered spanned a broad spectrum, however there could be a lot of shared experiences that I could rely on to help me craft and make steps towards providing a solution that works for all.

Bringing New Features

What does the product aim to achieve through great UX design?

Our current suite is overly complex, has poor discoverability, and an incredibly high barrier of entry

Core codebase is restrictive to improve across the app suite, one change influences all products on the codebase

UI is dated, does not reflect the current brand positioning and is a symptom of crowbarring new features where they will fit; not where they will offer the best experience

Power users wish to be able to automate their workflows, especially easing calibration processes and feedback within the volume

A single app, with multiple disciplines, that can be operated under a subscription license

For all your motion capture needs

My first (and most daunting) task was to understand how it would be possible to fold all of the current Vicon applications into a singular entity; retaining the individual traits of the industries they operate in but streamlining features to allow shared user workflows to thrive.

The product aims to coincide with the aims of the business to convert to a subscription model. In this concept I aimed to interweave licensing parameters by categorising the interface of Vicon One into sections that would be reflective of the industrial requirements; in-short, a Life Sciences user would not see or have access to an Entertainment workspace unless it was via a feature shared across those industries.

A secondary benefit of this would ease codebase maintenance. Reducing the dev resource wasted on keeping the systems running and also solving the legacy technical debt, that building applications over a split codebase has raised.

COHERANT VOLUME FEEDBACK, IMMEDIATELY.

Running UX research sessions with our customers and end-users for other apps would lead me to compile a backlog of pain points, gripes and expectations from the software that weren't being met, or were hindering out users. One of the largest and most vocal areas was centred around the feedback coming from the cameras in the volume. Newer Vicon hardware would utilise LEDs to change colour depending on the camera's status (active, contributing, errors, offline, disconnected, etc.) but this was largely hard to follow in the UI.

My solution is the CSB, "Contextual Status Bar". A perpetual floating feedback toolbar that would sit primarily in the top-centre of the workspace, and constantly provide live status updates of the system's performance. The CSB would adapt to the workspace view the user was working within to keep the information relevant and concise.

LIGHTS, CAMERAS, ACTION

The camera grid view of Vicon products is a widely used feature that is very useful to see through the viewfinders, aid with calibration and simply have as a monitoring station on a separate screen within the volume. These are typically split between 1:1 and 16:9 viewfinder windows within the grid (dependant on the cameras being used). The ability to bring camera views into full screen is a powerful action for users to have control over.
